Lost in the Sauce: GOP source has been a Russian agent for a decade

2020.09.14 14:27 rusticgorilla Lost in the Sauce: GOP source has been a Russian agent for a decade

Welcome to Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
Housekeeping:

GOP source is Russian agent

The Treasury Department announced new sanctions against Andriy Derkach, a Ukrainian lawmaker, accusing him of being an "active Russian agent" who is part of Moscow's interference in the 2020 campaign. Derkach has been actively promoting discredited anti-Biden materials for many months, including meeting with Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani to hand over disinformation (picture).
Between May and July 2020, Derkach released edited audio tapes and other unsupported information with the intent to discredit U.S. officials, and he levied unsubstantiated allegations against U.S. and international political figures
These tapes were laundered through Giuliani to OANN, the Senate Homeland Security Committee (via Chairman Sen. Ron Johnson), Don Jr., and the president himself.
Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) called out Sen. Johnson and Sen. Chuck Grassley (Chair of Senate Finance Cmte.) for collaborating with Derkach:
Derkach has been central in advancing the Russian disinformation that underpins Senate Republicans’ effort to smear Vice President Biden. For example, in April, the Republican chairmen of the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs and Finance Committees requested information about purported calls between Vice President Biden and Ukrainian officials. Then in May edited excerpts of those same calls involving Biden were leaked by Derkach and Andrii Telizhenko, the Senate Republicans’ star witness.
...Senate investigations should not parrot conspiracy theories pushed by Russian agents under U.S. sanctions, and Senate Republicans should immediately abandon this blatantly political effort.

DHS Whistleblower

Last week, the House Intelligence Committee released a whistleblower complaint made by former acting Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Intelligence and Analysis Brian Murphy. Chairman Adam Schiff released a statement saying the complaint “outlines grave and disturbing allegations that senior White House and Department of Homeland Security officials improperly sought to politicize, manipulate, and censor intelligence in order to benefit President Trump politically.”

On Russia

Page 10: Mr. Murphy made several protected disclosures between March 2018 and August 2020 regarding a repeated pattern of abuse of authority, attempted censorship of intelligence analysis and improper administration of an intelligence program related to Russian efforts to influence and undermine United States interests. The relevant officials at issue were Secretary Nielsen and Messrs. Wolf, Cuccinelli, Taylor, and Acting Deputy Director for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Kash Patel (“Mr. Patel”).
In May 2020, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told Murphy to “cease providing intelligence assessments on the threat of Russian interference in the United States, and instead start reporting on interference activities by China and Iran.” Wolf told Murphy those instructions came directly from White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien, according to Murphy, who said he refused to comply because “doing so would put the country in substantial and specific danger.”
In July 2020, DHS chief of staff John Gountanis intervened to stop publication of an intelligence bulletin warning about a Russian disinformation plot to “denigrate” the mental health of Joe Biden. On July 8, Murphy said, he met with Wolf, who told him that the intelligence notification should be “held” because it “made the President look bad.” After Murphy protested, Wolf excluded him from meetings about the notification, a draft of which was ultimately produced that Murphy felt minimized the actions of Russia.
The complaint details dozens of instances in which Murphy told his superiors about the abuses of power and political interference. The complaints either went nowhere or resulted in perceived retaliatory actions against Murphy. Many of these complaints were given to Kash Patel, former staffer to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), who played a key role in a Republican effort to discredit Mueller’s and the FBI’s Russia probes.
  • Related: NSC’s top legislative affairs official, Virginia Boney, was removed and sent to the Commerce Department earlier this year because she kept pressing the White House to prioritize election security efforts — and specifically the threat posed by Russia. To date, there have been no traditional NSC Principals Committee meetings — with senior Cabinet officials and the president — on the subject of Russian interference this year.

On white supremacy

Page 14: During multiple meetings between the end of May 2020 and July 31, 2020, Mr. Murphy made protected disclosures to Messrs. Wolf and Cuccinelli regarding abuse of authority and improper administration of an intelligence program with respect to intelligence information on ANTIFA and “anarchist” groups operating throughout the United States.
Murphy alleges that Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli ordered him to modify intelligence assessments to make the threat of white supremacy “appear less severe” and include information on violent “left-wing” groups and Antifa. The reason given was “to ensure they matched up with the public comments by President Trump on the subject of ANTIFA and ‘anarchist’ groups.”
After Murphy refused to change a draft report warning of the threat posed by White supremacists, Wolf and Cuccinelli reportedly stopped the report from being finished.

On immigration and asylum

In Dec. 2019, Cuccinelli expressed frustration with intelligence reports detailing conditions in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, and accused "deep-state intelligence analysts" of compiling the information to undermine Trump's objectives regarding asylum.
Page 9: The intelligence reports were designed to help asylum officers render better determinations regarding their legal standards… Mr. Murphy defended the work in the reports, but Mr. Cuccinelli stated he wanted changes to the information outlining high levels of corruption, violence, and poor economic conditions in the three respective countries...
Mr. Cuccinelli ordered Messrs. Murphy and [former I&A Under Secretary David] Glawe to identify the names of the “deep state” individuals who compiled the intelligence reports and to either fire or reassign them immediately.
Murphy also alleges that DHS gave false information to Congress last year about the numbers of suspected terrorists crossing the southern border. At the time, administration officials were repeating a 4,000 figure in an effort to justify the government shutdown over Trump's border wall. The true number was actually six. A DHS spokeswoman pressured NBC to take down a story exposing the lie last year.

Response

Chairman Schiff has subpoenaed Murphy to testify before the Intelligence Cmte. on September 21. The Cmte. also seeks to interview high-level DHS officials including Matthew Hanna, chief of staff in Murphy's former post at DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis; the office's top official, Horace Jen; DHS chief of staff John Gountanis; and his deputy, Tyler Houlton.
The Senate Intelligence Cmte. issued a bipartisan request for all of the intelligence analyses that Murphy referenced in his complaint, as well as any notes and materials that fed into them. The House Homeland Security Cmte. issued a subpoena for testimony from Wolf at a hearing on Sept. 17, but DHS says that Wolf will not comply and offers Cuccinelli to testify instead. Also scheduled to be at the hearing: FBI Director Christopher Wray and Christopher Miller of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Russia still interfering

Facebook recently took down accounts and pages associated with a Russian influence operation posing as an independent news outlet. The operation published content described as “an attempt to build a left-wing audience and steer it away from Biden’s campaign, in the same way that the original IRA [Internet Research Agency] tried to depress progressive and minority support for Hillary Clinton in 2016.”
  • The same Russian operation tried and failed to infiltrate left-wing media outlets such as Jacobin, Truthout, and In These Times.
Bob Woodward reported that“the NSA and CIA have classified evidence the Russians had placed malware in the election registration systems of at least two Florida counties, St. Lucie and Washington. While there was no evidence the malware had been activated, Woodward writes, it was sophisticated and could erase voters in specific districts.”
  • Woodward’s book also notes that former director of national intelligence Dan Coats has "deep suspicions" that Russian President Vladimir Putin "had something" on President Trump, seeing "no other explanation" for the president's behavior.
Microsoft alerted SKDKnickerbocker, one of Biden’s main election campaign advisory firms, that suspected Russian state-backed hackers had gone after the company with a failed phishing attack.

DOJ, politicization, and resignations

A top aide to Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham, federal prosecutor Nora Dennehy, resigned from the Justice Department and Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia probe. Dannehy reportedly resigned “at least partly out of concern” that Trump and AG Barr were exerting improper political pressure on the team to release results before the November election.
Several officials said expectations had been growing in the White House and Congress that Mr. Barr would make public, ahead of the election, some kind of interim report or list of findings from Mr. Durham before he completed the investigation. Mr. Barr had wanted Mr. Durham’s team to move quickly, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Trump has publicly expressed impatience with the Durham investigation, saying there should be more prosecutions and disclosures of information that would damage his political rivals. “Bill Barr has the chance to be the greatest of all time, but if he wants to be politically correct, he’ll be just another guy, because he knows all the answers, he knows what they have, and it goes right to Obama and it goes right to Biden,” Trump said (clip).
Last month, Barr predicted “significant developments in the probe before the election” (clip) and he indicated the DOJ would not respect an informal policy against taking investigative steps 60 days before Election Day. It was for this exact reason that the Trump administration claimed it fired former FBI Director James Comey.
On Tuesday’s Fox News, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows appeared to claim that he has seen documents—relevant to U.S. Attorney John Durham’s probe of the origins of the Russia investigation—which implicate several Trump and Obama administration officials in potentially illegal conduct.
  • Further reading: “Dannehy Resignation Confirms Barr’s Intent to Use Durham Probe for Political Ends,” Just Security.
Two other DOJ officials resigned last week:
Prosecutor John Choi resigned from Trump's law enforcement commission after expressing "serious" concerns that the intention of the commission was not to bridge the gap between communities of color and law enforcement.
Choi, a Democrat, said in his resignation letter that "it is now patently obvious ... that this process had no intention of engaging in a thoughtful and open analysis, but was intent on providing cover for a predetermined agenda that ignores the lessons of the past, furthering failed tough-on-crime policies that led to our current mass incarceration crisis and fueling divisions between our communities and our police officers."
Deputy Assistant AG David Morrell resigned on Friday, withdrawing from cases defending the government’s position on issues including the Census and the Portland protests.

The courts

A three-judge panel blocked the Trump administration from excluding undocumented immigrants from being counted in the census for apportionment. Trump’s order violates a statue saying apportionment must be based on everyone who is a resident of the United States.
District Judge Lucy Koh ordered the Trump admin. to produce internal documents connected to its sudden decision to end the 2020 Census count a month earlier. Two weeks ago, Koh temporarily blocked the bureau from winding down the count until a hearing set for Sept. 17.
Court-appointed adviser and retired judge John Gleeson slammed the Justice Department’s decision to drop the case against Michael Flynn, calling it a "corrupt and politically motivated favor.” A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Sept. 29.
"In the United States, Presidents do not orchestrate pressure campaigns to get the Justice Department to drop charges against defendants who have pleaded guilty -- twice, before two different judges -- and whose guilt is obvious," Gleeson wrote.
"Yet that is exactly what has unfolded here," he added.
A judge denied a bid to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that Trump's inaugural committee and the Trump Organization misused nonprofit funds to enrich the president's family business. The suit, brought by Washington, D.C., Attorney General Karl Racine in January, alleges that the president's inaugural committee was aware that it was being overcharged for services at Trump's Washington hotel in 2017 and still spent over $1 million at the hotel.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced two settlements totaling $583,100 with Deutsche Bank to resolve investigations into violations of Ukraine-related sanctions. The resolution came as the bank hired “an old friend” of AG Barr to “help the bank navigate the political waters in Washington.”

Trump profiting

Federal spending records show that taxpayers have paid Trump’s businesses more than $900,000 since he took office. At least $570,000 came as a result of the president’s travel.
In addition to the rentals at Mar-a-Lago, the documents show that the Trump Organization charged daily “resort fees” to Secret Service agents guarding Vice President Pence in Las Vegas and in another instance asked agents to pay a $1,300 “furniture removal charge” during a presidential visit to a Trump resort in Scotland.
Additionally, the Trump Organization has received at least $3.8 million in fees from GOP groups for headlining a political event at one of his properties.
Last month, the Trump Organization received approval for a new trademark in Argentina, the third one in the country. Last November, Trump may have altered U.S. foreign policy to assist his company in obtaining approval for the two previous trademarks. “Shortly after the trademark opposition period ended in April 2018, the Trump administration lifted tariffs on steel and aluminum in Argentina. Once the trademarks were officially granted to his company in November of last year, Trump announced that he would reinstate the tariffs.”
Somehow, Ivanka Trump’s fashion business is still making money despite being shutdown. According to her latest financial disclosures, “All operations of the business ceased on July 31, 2018.” Also according to her latest financial disclosures, she made at least six figures from the trust holding that business in 2019.
We - American taxpayers - footed the bill for “anti-scale fencing” along the perimeter of the White House this summer. The wall, ostensibly to protect Trump from protesters, cost over $1 million. Trump has a history of charging taxpayers for barriers around his properties, including $17,000 for fencing around Mar-a-Lago and $12,000 for “privacy fencing” around Trump International golf resort.

Immigration news

About 8,800 unaccompanied children have been quickly expelled from the United States along the Mexico border under a pandemic-related measure that effectively ended asylum. In total, the Trump administration has expelled more than 159,000 people since March.
ICE officers on the West Coast wanted to suppress Black Lives Matter protests in DC. But they aren't allowed to travel on charter flights without detainees on board. So they brought some detainees with them. In the process, they fueled a massive, deadly COVID outbreak at the Virginia facility that infected over 300 detainees, killing one.
The Pentagon is restarting many domestic projects that were plundered by Trump for money to pay for his border wall. The decision to revive these domestic projects has provided cover for Republican senators who were criticized when their home states lost military construction projects to the president’s wall.

Miscellaneous

Corruption: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is bringing back his extravagant, taxpayer-funded "Madison Dinners."
Corruption: Medicaid chief Seema Verma has charged taxpayers $6 million in less than two years for expensive consultants, organizers, and events. The Republican consultants were paid by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to work on Verma’s personal image, obtain profiles and coverage from friendly reporters, escort her during travel, write opinion articles, and even draft her Twitter posts.
Corruption: The Trump administration secretly withheld millions of dollars from a program for 9/11 first responders.
Corruption: “Ukraine gas company to add Rick Perry pick to board” and “Rick Perry’s Ukrainian Dream
Protests: Trump endorsed the extrajudicial killing of the suspect in a deadly Portland, Oregon, shooting. . “This guy was a violent criminal, and the US Marshals killed him,” Trump told Fox News host Jeanine Pirro. “And I will tell you something, that’s the way it has to be. There has to be retribution” (clip).
Protests: A witness claims that the Portland suspect, Michael Forest Reinoehl, was not armed and was shot by officers without any warning.
Rightwing: “QAnon fans spread fake claims about real fires in Oregon” and “'Do not take action yourselves': Multnomah Co. Sheriff's Office warns of illegal 'checkpoints' ”
Rightwing: Mark Zuckerberg says it's "just wrong" to consider Facebook a right-wing echo chamber driven by conservative voices. But data from his own company shows that’s exactly what Facebook is.
Environment: David Legates, a University of Delaware professor of climatology who has spent much of his career questioning basic tenets of climate science, has been hired for a top position at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Environment: How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled. Your plastic will not be recycled.
Environment: Trump’s Fire Sale of Public Lands for Oil and Gas Drillers: The Bureau of Land Management is rushing to auction off sites ahead of a potential Biden presidency.
World: The Iranian government is considering assassinating the US ambassador to South Africa in response to the killing earlier this year of Qassem Soleimani, according to highly classified intel reports. The plot against the ambassador, Lana Marks, is one of several options US officials believe Iran is considering for retaliation over Soleimani’s death.
  • Woodward reported that Sen. Lindsey Graham urged Trump not to assassinate Suleimani while on the golf course with the president. Graham warned Trump he would be raising the stakes from “playing $10 blackjack to $10,000-a-hand blackjack”. “This is over the top,” the senator said. “How about hitting someone a level below Suleimani, which would be much easier for everyone to absorb?”
World: Read some of the “love letters” Kim Jong Un sent to Trump.
World: Woodward also reported that Trump boasted that he protected Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after Jamal Khashoggi's brutal murder. "I saved his ass,” Trump said. “I was able to get Congress to leave him alone. I was able to get them to stop.”

2020.09.05 22:02 staysaasy How to Sell to the Enterprise: Avoid Saying No

One of the hardest parts of building an enterprise SaaS company is figuring out how to crack large accounts – $100k-$10m annual contracts. I've been thinking and writing on this topic recently, and wanted to share some of those thoughts below (original post here):
****************
To sell your product to enterprise buyers, minimize the times when you need to say “No” during the sales cycle.
Enterprise software purchasing is a complex process with potentially innumerable stakeholders and procedural hurdles to cross. Even if you have a badass product that will perfectly fit your customer’s needs, you still need to wade through a complex buying process.
The decision to buy a product like Netflix is simple: I want to watch a once-in-a-generation classic like “Selling Sunset,” so I pay for Netflix to stream it into my greedy eyeballs. As an individual, I make the purchasing decision and enjoy the rewards alone (thankfully).
Contrast this to a buyer like the US Air Force deciding to use Slack – even just calculating the number of users that they’ll have is a non-trivial task, and that’s for a relatively straightforward, consumer-friendly SaaS product. Transformational changes – say, moving to the cloud – can be exponentially more complex. The number of stakeholder approvals and compliance hurdles that must be vanquished on the way to this sort of purchase boggles the mind, but this is exactly where you make your bones as an enterprise SaaS business.

Detractors Want You to Say “No”

Innumerable potential blockers can arise during a sales cycle: you’ll have to say “No” to a particular use-case provided by the product that you’ll be replacing, or explain why you lack a feature that a buyer was expecting from a previous job. In most cases these gaps are unimportant… but these blockers can really throw a wrench into the sales process.
Adversaries who oppose a new software vendor will latch onto any time when you don’t say “Yes” like a lamprey – poking holes in the case to buy your product. Blocking stakeholders are typically incentivized to either preserve the status quo or explicitly harm your case, and include:
One of the biggest enemies when selling to a complex organization is time. Buyers get discouraged if it’s taking too long to sign a new vendor, and there’s often a small window when a company is ready for change and the stars have aligned for them to drop some serious coin for it. Detractors will latch onto any “Nos” that they hear and use it to delay or kill a sales cycle. This is especially common when replacing a strong incumbent – you had better believe that Oracle knows every trick in the book to make it seem that your product is untrustworthy or incomplete.
In order to overcome this, allow your sales team to say “Yes” as often as possible. The client is worried about some niche use-case? We have a partner who will make it happen. The client wants a particular security feature? We can make sure that the particular risk the Security team flagged will be handled. The client needs to format their data just right for board meetings? With a little bit of elbow grease on the customer’s part, we can support it.
Ways to say Yes more:
  1. Make your product as flexible as possible - eg make everything programmable via API or expose webhook callbacks for all major business actions. This helps customers, consultants, or your implementation teams extend your product’s capabilities for use-cases that are unique to them, which you’ll never directly build yourself.
  2. Identify major gaps that will be a pain to build for, and find quality partners who can fill in these capabilities. Similar to the above, this allows you to cover niche functionality that only a few customers will need.
  3. Make it easy to transfer raw data into or out of your platform. For example, virtually every enterprise product requires some amount of internal executive level reporting, which is typically both critical and highly team-specific. By furnishing raw data exports you can check the box of helping to provide these reports. Being able to ingest or output large volumes of data also helps check the box of whether it’ll be easy to migrate to your product.
  4. Building common no-regrets enterprise features. For example, the areas of governance (SAML, RBAC), security (password controls, 2FA, internal endpoint protection), compliance (SOC 2, HIPAA), and audit logs are all areas where it’s easy to have a gap that will scare the shit out of a conservative buyer. By building for lots of use-cases in this area, you can ensure that you won’t get ruled out for missing features that are peripheral to your core value proposition.
  5. Find the right customers. If you’re constantly finding yourself saying No during the sales cycle, you’re probably selling to the wrong folks. This is common for early-stage startups or when your sales & marketing teams aren’t generating enough pipeline (forcing you to sell to weak leads). Having a very strong perspective on why your product is special, and who it’s special for, can help you to avoid this trap. So can having discipline – you’re often better off doubling down on making your core customer deliriously happy than stretching for a flashy new logo.
Note that the strongest form of #1 and #2 is turning yourself into a platform that others can build on top of.

Case Study: Salesforce

Salesforce has a decent product. It’s by far the dominant player in the CRM industry, but it’s hardly a loveable product like (say) Zoom, Uber, Datadog, the iPhone, or even Excel. However, Salesforce has used this product to become the #1 in their industry, in part because their team can sell the hell out of it.
If you look at Salesforce, you’ll see that they use all of the techniques described above to ensure that they always have a story for how they can deliver, even if it requires extra integration work. Combined with their ferocious marketing, it’s little surprise that they’re approaching a $200B market cap as of this writing:

Case Study: Slack

Slack got its start by selling to smaller organizations and startups, but has since extended their reach into the enterprise. As time has gone on and they’ve begun to see real competitors, they’ve used all of the this post’s enterprise sales tactics to continue to move up-market:

Takeaways

Saying Yes often (or saying No infrequently) is important in enterprise sales cycles. To find more ways to say Yes:

2020.09.01 22:07 eZGjBw1Z [Scotch] Classic Malts Coastal and Strong Collections on Clearance Today

I'm not a Scotch expert but this seems like a deal worth posting.
Today's price changes dropped the price by $26 to $38.99 for both of these products
Although OHLQ says these are 200 ML products, Brand Master says they're 20.4 oz which is 603.3 ML. This matches up with the 3x200 ML products linked in parenthesis above. This three pack is $1.92/fl oz. Separately, the 750 ML bottles of each of these products are more expensive so this could be a good way to try new things at a good value.
The catch is that when these products are de-listed (and flagged as Last Call items?) we are completely blocked from seeing their availability online in all but a few stores (more than just the Last Call stores for some reason). The Coastal Pack was de-listed on 7/1 data from then is now two months out of date. The Strong Pack was de-listed today so at least that's a bit more recent. They have also hidden the Strong Pack at any store that is not a Last Call location. Both products are actually listed on the Last Call products list. HandMeSomeHandsome shared that stores are not required to send product back to the state to be consolidated at Last Call locations so you may be able to find this stuff closer to home.
As of the end of last update on 6/30, just before it was de-listed, CLASSIC MALTS - COASTAL PACK was shown in the following stores. Some may have sold out by now but I doubt any other stores than these would have received this product after it was de-listed

2020.08.07 14:26 ILikeNeurons Common misconceptions about sexual consent, explained

It's important to understand sexual consent because sexual activity without consent is sexual assault. Before you flip out about how "everyone knows what consent is," that is absolutely not correct! Some (in fact, many) people are legit confused about what constitutes consent, such as this teenager who admitted he would ass-rape a girl because he learned from porn that girls like anal sex (overwhelmingly not true, in addition to being irrelevant), or this ostensibly well-meaning college kid who put his friend at STI risk after assuming she was just vying for a relationship when she said no, or this guy from the "ask a rapist thread" who couldn't understand why a sex-positive girl would not have sex with him, or this guy who seemed to think that because a woman was a submissive that meant he could dominate her, or this 'comedian' who haplessly made a public rape confession in the form of a comedy monologue, or this 'well-liked kid' who thought good girls always had to fight a little the first time. In fact, researchers have found that in acquaintance rape--one of the most common types of rape--perpetrators tend to see their behavior as seduction, not rape, or they somehow believe the rape justified.
Yet sexual assault is a tractable problem. Offenders often rationalize their behavior by whether society will let them get away with it, and the more the rest us confidently understand consent the better advocates we can be for what's right. And yes, a little knowledge can actually reduce the incidence of sexual violence.
So, without further ado, the following are common misconceptions about sexual consent:
If all of this seems obvious, ask yourself how many of these key points were missed in popular analyses of this viral news article.

2020.08.03 12:02 TracingWoodgrains Book Review: Amusing Ourselves To Death (Part 1: Boston and Typographic Culture)

Part 2: Postman's Present: Las Vegas and Show Business
Part 3: Postman's Future: Silicon Valley and Internet Culture
Do you recall Socrates's argument against writing? Fortunately, Plato wrote it down, so we can review it today:
And so it is that you by reason of your tender regard for the writing that is your offspring have declared the very opposite of its true effect. If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls. They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks.
Most of the time, we raise it to chuckle at the carelessness of the past and how people will fearmonger over every new development. There's a time-honored tradition of laughing at doomsaying. After reading Joshua Foer's account of studying mnemonics, though, it makes me chuckle for a different reason altogether: Socrates was completely right. People talk about rediscovering mnemonics, about surprise at learning just what feats of memory we're capable of. Such rediscovery was only ever relevant because a culture of writing supplanted an oral culture. As Socrates expected, the more we learned to rely on external marks, the less we relied on our own memories.
My point is this: As easy as it is to mock doomsayers who rise up with each new technology, there is still something to be learned from their object-level points. We typically judge the tradeoffs of shifting to new tools to be worthwhile, but there are things we lose alongside our gains. Pessimism is not a new genre, but sometimes the pessimists have real points.
With that in mind, let's jump into the work of one of the most prescient pessimists in recent history.
You may or may not have heard of Amusing Ourselves To Death, but if you're reading this it's very likely you've at least come across one quote from it, perhaps in comic form. The book was written in 1985, just after the world collectively breathed a sigh of relief in seeing that the world had not, in fact, turned into an Orwellian hellscape. Ever the optimist, Postman sat down to remind everyone Orwell was only one of the two dystopian writers to sear their visions into the collective mind. As he puts it, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us. Postman, sharing that fear, wrote a book of prophecies. The rest of us, being human, leapt headlong onto Postman's nightmare.
Postman spends the book carving out and analyzing distinct cultural eras of American history, notably a typographic culture of the past and the show business culture of his present, each of which I will devote a section to. He marks the shifting of the national spirit with cities most emblematic of the spirit of an age, marking Boston, then New York, then Chicago in turn as the symbols of one day or another. Las Vegas, the city devoted wholly to entertainment, is his choice for the metaphor of his day. As the national spirit has moved on to San Francisco and Silicon Valley at some point in the 35 years since his writing, I will spend another section exploring his future, our present, in light of his thoughts.

Postman's Past: Boston and Typographic Culture

"The poorest labourer upon the shore of the Delaware thinks himself entitled to deliver his sentiment in matters of religion or politics with as much freedom as the gentleman or scholar.... Such is the prevailing taste for books of every kind, that almost every man is a reader." - Jacob Duché, 1772
1.
One of Postman's recurring obsessions through the book is the way the biases of our communication mediums shape the thoughts within them. In a moment that could have been ripped straight from Legal Systems Very Different From Ours, he describes the oral law of a west African tribe. When disputes come up, complainants go to the tribe chief, who rather than consulting a written body of law dives around in his recollection for a proverb that suits the situation and satisfies the complainants p.18 (future pages as noted). Wisdom is the essence of their legal system.
The Greeks, meanwhile, placed rhetoric towards the heart of their truth-seeking process, where "to disdain rhetorical rules, to speak one's thoughts in a random manner, without proper emphasis or appropriate passion, was considered demeaning to the audience's intelligence and suggegstive of falsehood" p.22. Both stand in stark contrast to our truth-seeking process, where as Postman puts it, in ours "lawyers do not have to be wise; they need to be well briefed" p.20. We like written records, preferably with plenty of numbers. One who aims to contain legal truth in a proverb here would be laughed out of court. Economists use data, not poetry, to convey truths about our standards of living. Our metaphors change, and shape us as we shape them.
Postman lists a number of demands of what he calls print-intelligence: a requirement to remain immobile for extended time, to pay no attention to the shapes of the letters, to assume an attitude of objectivity, to analyze tone and attitude, to delay a verdict and hold in mind questions as the argument unfolds, to bring to bear your relevant experience and knowledge while withholding the irrelevant.
What did typography bring in its wake? It "fostered... modern individuality, but it destroyed the medieval sense of community and integration... created prose but made poetry into an exotic and elitist form... made modern science possible but transformed religious sensibility into mere superstition." p.29 Shifts. Good shifts? Probably. But shifts nonetheless.
Postman claims that the America of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was remarkably print-oriented, perhaps more so than any other culture in history. To be honest, I was hoping for more evidence than he provided, but it's worth going through the highlights. He cites evidence that the male literacy rate in 17th century Massachusetts was "somewhere between 89 and 95 percent", 62 percent for women. Other data he cites for the time: Middlesex County records at the same time indicated that 60% of the estates contained books, and between 1682 and 1685 Boston's leading bookseller imported 3,421 books from one English dealer for a community of 75000 - equivalent to ten million or so for the US today. They established laws for maintenance of "reading and writing" schools almost immediately.
One of the more convincing moments was his overview of the success of Paine's Common Sense. In its first two months, it sold 100,000 copies, and its print run reached somewhere between 300,000 and half a million. Scaling it up proportionate to 1985, it had a reach of 24 million, comparable to the Super Bowl p.35. Uncle Tom's Cabin was only modestly less successful, selling 305,000 copies in its first year (equivalent to four million in modern America). After running through all that, he provides a charming but difficult-to-assess overview of the literary culture in late 18th and early 19th century America: pamphlets and broadsides disseminating like wildfire, the Federalist Papers recently made famous once more by the musical Hamilton, libraries blossoming around the country, people passing around "pirated" editions of Dickens in the absence of international copyright laws and then greeting him like a rock star when he arrived in the country, Lyceum lecture halls springing up in every town for leading intellectuals like Ralph Waldo Emerson to address the public p.39.
This is all notable, Postman insists, not only because of its quantity but because it was all people had. There weren't a horde of competing mediums, no telegraph or radio or internet. The public discourse was, fundamentally, a print discourse, not limited to elites. "It is no mere figure of speech," he quotes from Paul Anderson," to say that farm boys followed the plow with book in hand, be it Shakespeare, Emerson, or Thoreau" p.63.
2.
What does all that matter? Again, what does a print discourse do? His core example comes with the Lincoln-Douglas debates. One was an extended affair in which Douglas delivered a speech for three hours, after which Lincoln encouraged everyone to break for dinner because he would use a similar length of time, after which Douglas would still need to present a rebuttal. At the time of the encounter, neither was even a Senate candidate. It was just part of the everyday fabric of events, where speakers at state fairs were often allotted several hours for their arguments. Other times, people would deliver literal stump speeches near felled trees, gathering audiences for a few hours. p.45
It isn't just the length Postman emphasizes, but the form. Take a look at an excerpt from one of Lincoln's debates:
It will readily occur to you that I cannot, in half an hour, notice all the things that so able a man as Judge Douglas can say in an hour and a half; and I hope, therefore, if there be anything that he has said upon which you would like to hear something from me, but which I omit to comment upon, you will bear in mind that it would be expecting an impossibility for me to cover his whole ground.
After citing this, Postman muses, perhaps ironically for 2020: "It is hard to imagine the present occupant of the White House being capable of constructing such clauses in similar circumstances" p.46. He goes on to point out that the speeches, including rebuttals, were written, and the whole of it carried "the resonance of typography". In such a culture, he says, "public discourse tends to be characterized by a coherent, orderly arrangement of facts and ideas" p.51.
This culture spread to domains as diverse as preaching and advertising. Postman contrasts revivalist preachers like Jonathan Edwards and Charles Finney with modern figures like Billy Graham, with their sermons featuring "tightly knit and closely reasoned expositions of theological doctrine" and a steady feeling of intellectualism. I can't speak to that directly, but as someone who spent most of my childhood poring over one of the fruits of the Great Awakening, I can attest at least somewhat to its rhetorical density. For better or worse, theological lectures of the time were not light affairs.
And advertising! Take a look at an ad from one Paul Revere:
Whereas many persons are so unfortunate as to lose their Fore-Teeth by Accident, and otherways, to their great Detriment, not only in Looks, but Speaking both in Public and Private:--This is to inform all such, that they may have them re-placed with false Ones, that look as well as the Natural, and Answers the End of Speaking to all Intents, by PAUL REVERE, Goldsmith, near the Head of Dr. Clarke's Wharf, Boston. p.59
Per Postman, advertisers of the time assumed potential buyers to be literate, rational, and analytical, making wordy pleas aimed at conveying information. p.59 This started to change sometime around the 1890's, with the introduction of slogans, and beyond.
I'm not certain entirely what to make of Postman's romanticized view of the typographic culture of the past. Much of it feels perhaps too good to be true, a highlight reel of a long period, selectively glancing at the best it had to offer in support of his thesis. I'm not sure how convinced I am that the Lincoln-Douglas debates, for example, were the rule rather than an exception memorable enough to work its way into the history books. Even a culture able to support them as an exception, though, would say something.
More, that print was broadly uncontested at the time is true, and it's hard not to read extant works from that era without noticing the floweriness, the seriousness, the complexity of the language. I brought the Book of Mormon up deliberately, because I think it makes a good case study of early 19th century literature, written (as Mormons hasten to remind) by one who very much fit the profile of a farm boy following the plow with book in hand. It is the sort of work that arises, and gains enough influence to spur a religious movement converting thousands, only in a print-centric culture.
My verdict, if it matters, is broadly towards the idea that a culture like the one Postman describes was influential throughout early American history, even while the reality was less romantic than his portrayal of it could be read as. Common Sense and the Federalist Papers, religious movements of the time, and the sheer length of the Lincoln-Douglas debates all suggest there is at least some fire beneath the smoke signals he describes.

PIPELINE

Advantages of IBIO-400

FINANCIALS

CONCERNS:
· A few very important quotes from the 10-Q filed 05/15/2020
· “To become and remain profitable, the Company must succeed in commercializing its technologies, alone or with its licensees, the service offerings provided by its CDMO facility, and in developing and eventually commercializing products that generate significant revenue. In addition, profitability will depend on continuing to attract and retain customers for the development, manufacturing and technology transfer services offered by the Company.”
· “Based on the total cash on hand of approximately $10.0 million as of March 31, 2020, combined with subsequent purchases of the Company’s common stock by Lincoln Park through the date of the filing of this report totaling approximately $10 million, we believe the Company has adequate cash on hand to support the Company’s activities for at least one year from this report date.”

CONCLUSION
I am bullish medium/long term on IBIO if they can mange to effectively license their technology platforms as well as continue to further research and develop their vaccination candidates. IF either IBIO 200 and/or 201 show positive results soon in combating COVID, this is could lead to government funding (possible OWS) as the ability to mass produce 500 million vaccines annually on their own is huge. They have burned through a good bit of cash and are reliant on some key factors, but overall with the direction the world is going and the increased popularity/demand for vaccines, I am positive on the future outlook of IBIO for now.
I own a position of 1050 shares @ 4.49 and plan to hold for 1+ year.
Hope everyone enjoys and as always I invite comments, concerns, and additional information I missed. Best of luck to everyone with their trades and have a great weekend!

EDIT 1: July 29, 2020: IBIO filed an 8-K. Within the 8-K, it states "The Company plans to participate in media interviews and make a series of investor presentations over the next several weeks, during which it intends to discuss the preliminary preclinical data set forth in Exhibit 99.1, which is incorporated herein by reference." (Page 3, Item 8.01). In my opinion, you wouldn't participate in media interviews and prepare for investor presentations if you had negative preliminary data or doubts. I remain upbeat about the next few months.

EDIT 2: Ibio activated SAM funding on 07/31/2020

EDIT 3: Going back over my DD I realize I have left out 3 very important relationships iBio has formed this year.
  1. iBio Selected by IBM Watson Health for the use of IBM Clinical Development Solution at No Cost to help Support clinical COVID-19 Vaccine Candidates
    1. IBM Watson Health has selected iBio to receive 18 months of use of the IBM Clinical Development (ICD) solution, free-of-charge.
  2. iBio Expands COVID-19 Vaccine Collaboration to Include the Infectious Disease Research Institute (Seattle).
    1. Signed two Master Services Agreements (the MSAs”) and a Memorandum of Understanding (the “MoU”) with the Infectious Disease Research Institute (“IDRI”) in support of iBio’s SARS-CoV-2 Virus-Like Particle (“VLP”) vaccine development.
    2. IDRI will support pre-clinical development and provide clinical trial oversight, while iBio will provide process development and manufacturing services to IDRI, as needed.
    3. Additionally, the MoU calls for iBio and IDRI to establish a separate, additional agreement within the next 60 days if the Company opts to include one of IDRI’s novel adjuvants in the COVID-19 vaccine development program (“IBIO-200”).
    4. The MSAs and the MoU integrate IDRI into iBio’s collaboration with the Texas A&M University System to create a strong partnership that brings deep experience and advanced technologies and capabilities to the task of moving IBIO-200 into the clinic.
  3. Joined the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (“NIIMBL”), one of 14 institutes in the Manufacturing USA Network.
    1. NIIMBL is a public-private partnership that aims to accelerate biopharmaceutical manufacturing innovations and establish an international, leading workforce to fundamentally strengthen the U.S. biopharmaceutical industry.
    2. NIIMBL has an extensive network of more than 140 academic and industry partners within the U.S., including biopharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, research laboratories and non-profit organizations.

EDIT 4:
Alright, so this is ALL THEORY again but I can't help but post to get everyones opinion.
I was going back and watching Trump's Press Conference from July 28th where he talks about "producing 100 million vaccines as soon as a vaccine is approved and then 500 million doses shortly after."
So, the 500 million dose approximation Trump stated caught my attention because that is the same approximation iBio has claimed previously and was reiterated by Tom Isett in his The Hill interview.
What REALLY caught my attention was at 0:21 to 0:45. Trump begins to ramble on about "logistically using the military", a group of people who's "whole life is based around logistics", and them being able to do it very very quickly. Well at the end Trump says "a very very talented General is in charge."
First, the Department of Defense built the 130,000 sq ft CDO that iBio acquired in Bryan, Texas. So they know it exist.
Second, guess who are on the Board of Directors at iBio, Inc.?
General (Ret.) James T. Hill was the Commander of the 4-Star United States Southern Command, reporting directly to the President and Secretary of Defense at the time of his retirement from active duty. As such he led all U.S. military forces and operations in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, worked directly with U.S. Ambassadors, foreign heads of state, key Washington decision-makers, foreign senior military and civilian leaders, developing and executing United States policy. His responsibilities included management, development and execution of plans and policy within the organization including programming, communications, manpower, operations, logistics and intelligence. General Hill's experience implementing plans and policies within diverse geographic regions and his insights regarding the conduct of business affairs in Central and South America is a key resource for us.

Philip K. Russell, M.D. served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1959 to 1990, pursuing a career in infectious disease and tropical medicine research. Following his military service, Dr. Russell joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University's School of Hygiene and Public Health and worked closely with the World Health Organization as special advisor to the Children's Vaccine Initiative. He was founding board member of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and was an advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He has served on numerous advisory boards of national and international agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control ("CDC"), the National Institutes of Health ("NIH") and the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Russell is a past Chairman of the Albert B. Sabin Vaccine Institute. Dr. Russell's extensive experience and expertise in the field of infectious diseases and his association with leading governmental and not-for-profit entities engaged in pioneering work throughout the world provides us with invaluable insights into priorities for these entities and business development opportunities for us.

EDIT 5:
Here are a few things I’ve been looking into lately in regard to iBio:
First off, The US Government has made investments in programmes such as DARPA’s Blue Angel and other accelerated, large-scale manufacturing efforts for medical countermeasures within the Department of Defense and Department of Health and Human Services to develop capabilities to rapidly respond to any emerging disease or pandemic threat.
[DARPA Effort Speeds Biothreat Response](https://archive.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=61520)
This is an article from DoD website from 2010.
This lead me to begin researching G-Con:
Since 2009, G-CON has lead the cleanroom industry, fulfilling pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical needs and embracing new trends. G-CON designs, builds and installs prefabricated cleanroom PODs for a variety of dimensions and purposes, from laboratory environments to personalized medicines and even production process platforms.
Well I was watching a YouTube video about The GreenVax Project and the construction of the facility in Bryan/College Station that iBio eventually acquires in 2016.
https://youtu.be/T0nukOKUiCo
The same exact clean room solutions that G-Con designs is what Giroir is talking about in the video about being able to move the rooms around due to the air bearings.
EDIT 6:
USDA Confirmation of iBio planting seeds for Human Consumption.
EDIT 5: July 31st, 2020
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Defense (DoD) today announced agreements with Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to support advanced development including clinical trials and large-scale manufacturing of 100 million doses of a COVID-19 investigational adjuvanted vaccine.... The U.S. government also has the ability to acquire up to 500 million additional doses. Is this could be what Trump was referring to?
It very well could be! I’ve stated that this is theory and nothing is for certain.
However, it has been said by many doctors/scientists that it will take many manufactures and vaccines to produce what’s being demanded. Even Trump stated that at his North Carolina COVID press release.
Things that stood out to me HHS, DoD article.
I could still very well be wrong. This is a personal opinion based on my own research and conclusions.

EDIT 7: August 6th, 2020
Trump signs executive order requiring government to buy ‘essential’ drugs from U.S. companies
EDIT 8: August 7th, 2020
SEC FORM SC 13D/A Eastern Capital Ltd. [Amend] General statement of acquisition of beneficial ownership.

2020.07.23 12:35 IIST_AMA Hello everyone. We are random former students of IIST. Ask Us Anything!

I am Rachana from second batch of IIST, Avionics. I worked with ISRO/DoS for 5 years and was mostly involved in FPGA implementation of ground processing algorithms for high-res LEO remote sensing satellites. Just for kicks, did a professional master in space and telecommunications laws from NALSAR university during 2015-2017 alongside the ISRO job.
Then wanted to gain experience in building satellites and also experience the international space ecosystem. The master of space engineering course from TU-Berlin matched my requirements and so quit ISRO in 2017 and moved to Berlin. Started working as a student employee at Berlin Space Technologies alongside the master course. BST has been building microsatellite platforms and sub-systems for a decade now.
Spent a year at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) for my master thesis. Alongside the master thesis research, I also did some FPGA programming for detector electronics for the Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) robotic sample return mission. Details here.
Graduated in Dec 2019 and has been working full-time with Berlin Space Technologies since then as a Development engineer. I write code for onboard data handling systems of microsatellite subsystems and also for automation of ground testing equipment.
Here is the most popular article on my space-themed blog - Brutally honest answers to Space FAQs

2020.07.17 14:52 rusticgorilla Long-term effects of COVID-19 may create a generation of the disabled

Welcome, dear readers, to my semi-regular coronavirus roundup.
The title refers to Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccine scientist, who told CNN: “We're starting to see long-term disability from this illness...In many ways we're gonna be producing a generation of disabled individuals." (video)
Housekeeping:

Long-term health effects

More research and anecdotal evidence indicate that those who survive the coronavirus often suffer long-term and recurring effects. This illustrates the foolishness of celebrating a lower death rate as indicative of a less severe outbreak.
The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study of Italian 143 patients (average age 56) discharged from the hospital after “recovery” from COVID-19. Two months later, only 13% were symptom-free. 87.4% reported persistence of at least 1 symptom, particularly fatigue and dyspnea (labored breathing). Worsened quality of life was observed among 44.1% of patients.
  • Further reading: “Report Suggests Some ‘Mildly Symptomatic’ Covid-19 Patients Endure Serious Long-Term Effects,” Forbes, summarizes European studies
There is increasing evidence that COVID-19 causes permanent lung-scarring:
In a study from China, published in March, 66 of 70 patients still had some level of lung damage after being discharged from hospital.
Radiologists in the UK say, based on the early results of follow-up scans, they are concerned about the long term-effects of a serious infection. "In the six-week scans we're seeing, so far I would say between 20% and 30% of patients who have been in hospital appear to show some early signs of lung scarring," says Dr Hare, who helped draw up NHS radiology protocols to diagnose Covid-19.
According to Berkley’s John Swartzberg, clinical professor emeritus of infectious diseases and vaccinology, other organs are negatively impacted, too:
Another area is the heart. There is evidence now that the virus can directly attack heart muscle cells, and there’s also evidence that the cytokine storm that the virus triggers in the body not only damages the lungs, but can damage the heart… it could be that we will have a population of people who survive COVID-19 only to go on and have chronic cardiac problems.
The third organ system that we’re now pretty clear about is the central nervous system. There is evidence of direct involvement of the virus with neurons, and also the cytokine storm and inflammatory mediators can cause damage to the central nervous system. This is manifesting itself not only in neurologic clinical findings, but also psychological findings...
Finally, it has become clear that infection with SARS-CoV-2 triggers abnormal clotting of the blood in some people. This has led to pulmonary emboli, which are blood clots that travel to and damage the lungs, and strokes, which are blood clots in the vascular system of the brain. Both pulmonary emboli and strokes may have long-term consequences for these two organs.
  • Further reading: “Severe brain damage possible even with mild coronavirus symptoms,” DW
The Atlantic interviewed nine people who have COVID-19 and were never admitted to an ICU, meaning they qualify as having a “mild” case of the disease. However, they are just a handful of thousands suffering long-term health challenges as a result.
...their lives have nonetheless been flattened by relentless and rolling waves of symptoms that make it hard to concentrate, exercise, or perform simple physical tasks. Most are young. Most were previously fit and healthy. “It is mild relative to dying in a hospital, but this virus has ruined my life,” LeClerc said. “Even reading a book is challenging and exhausting. What small joys other people are experiencing in lockdown—yoga, bread baking—are beyond the realms of possibility for me.”
...As many people reported “brain fogs” and concentration challenges as coughs or fevers. Some have experienced hallucinations, delirium, short-term memory loss, or strange vibrating sensations when they touch surfaces. Others are likely having problems with their sympathetic nervous system, which controls unconscious processes like heartbeats and breathing: They’ll be out of breath even when their oxygen level is normal, or experience what feel like heart attacks even though EKG readings and chest X-rays are clear. These symptoms wax, wane, and warp over time.

Equipment and supplies

The National Stockpile is still short on personal protective equipment (PPE)... An internal report revealed that:
  • FEMA and the national stockpile have fewer than 900,000 gloves in reserve after shipping 82.7 million of them — or just 30 percent of the amount requested by state, local and tribal governments — since the COVID-19 crisis began
  • there are 329,000 pairs of goggles on hand, and the administration has only been able to provide 29 percent of the 4.9 million requested by state and local governments so far, according to the tables.
  • Similarly, 8.5 million gowns are warehoused — the HHS Department did not break down how many are surgical and how many are nonsurgical — while only 5.2 million of the 17.9 million surgical gowns requested (29 percent) have been shipped out.
  • The administration has also struggled in its efforts to procure body bags. State and local governments have requested 175,797 of them, according to the HHS data, but only 69,067 have been provided.
In particular, nursing homes and long-term care facilities say there is a major personal protective equipment shortage.
"Currently, nearly 20 percent of nursing homes report to CDC [the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] that they either do not have or have less than a one-week supply of PPE, and more than half of assisted living communities have less than a two-week supply of N-95 masks and gowns… N-95 masks are still not available and were not included in the FEMA shipments to nursing homes."
  • Further reading: America is running short on masks, gowns, and gloves. Again. Health-care workers are scrambling for supplies and reusing equipment as the coronavirus pandemic surges
  • Further reading: Nearly four months after invoking the Defense Production Act, the Trump administration has made only sparing use of its authorities, leaving front-line workers in dire need of supplies like masks, gowns, and gloves amid the recent surge in cases.
  • Further reading: Private sector officials testified to the House Oversight Cmte that the Trump administration’s failure to bring procurement efforts under a federal umbrella was “one of the biggest missed opportunities.” The companies informed Committee staff that they have serious concerns that “raw material for PPE is now in a really bad position worldwide.” As one company official stated: “Supply is still coming in, but not enough to meet demand.”
Some White House staffers argued against a DOJ effort to stop price-gouging and scamming during the pandemic… These “free-marketeers” felt the massive influx of people wheeling and dealing for PPE was a sign that the free market was working efficiently to move materials where they needed to go. However, some watchdog groups say that the DOJ’s task force didn’t go far enough.
Two federal agencies gave nearly $20 million in contracts to a newly formed California company without realizing the owner was sued by the same government. Jason Cardiff, of VPL Medical LLC, was sanctioned by the Federal Trade Commission for running a fraudulent scheme.
  • Further reading: The federal government is essentially providing seed money to PPE startups, including some run by people accused of fraud. Mask brokers describe a simple blueprint for buying masks from China to get rich.
Trump Is Donating Ventilators to Countries That Don’t Need or Can’t Use Them… White House officials have pushed the U.S. Agency for International Development to purchase thousands of the expensive devices from U.S. companies and donate them abroad...The administration’s decisions on ventilator distribution appear to have little correlation to the number of coronavirus deaths or infections in a country.

Testing in the U.S.

Numerous states are reporting shortages in testing supplies are significantly slowing down their testing capacity. For instance, Louisiana, Oregon, Arkansas, Nebraska, and California have experienced have seen a shortage in testing kits, chemical reagents, and other necessary supplies.
  • On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Trump to use the Defense Production Act “immediately to address the need for the testing equipment” and “equipment to make judgments about positive or negative.”
Some areas are experiencing testing delays of over a week, so long that the results are proving useless to the effort to control the disease. The surge in infection, especially in the southern states, has overwhelmed labs and caused a shortage of supplies across the nation. Private labs Quest and LabCorp say the backlog is growing unsustainably large.
  • The federal government never fixed fundamental infrastructure problems, experts say: “Instead of building that out, our federal response was to do the very least possible. So each time the system is stretched now, it breaks down all over again,” said Ashish K. Jha, who directs the Harvard Global Health Institute. “It’s frustrating because . . . it’s not like, ‘Oh my god, we just figured out we need to do testing.’ We’ve literally been talking about this for months.”
The ripple effect of the increased cases in the south has impacted other states, causing backlogs across the nation. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee: “This is a challenge because these southern states are creating a huge demand on these commercial labs…But we need help from the federal government. I’ve said this now for four or five months… We need to have a very rapid turnaround time so that our contact tracing can be successful and we need national leadership to help in that regard”
The number of daily coronavirus tests being conducted in the U.S. is only 39% of the target rate needed to mitigate the spread of the virus. Just 12 states—Maine, Vermont, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Alaska, Hawaii, West Virginia, Montana, Kansas, and Washington, D.C.—are testing at the optimal rate, NYT reported.
Trump has continued to rant about testing “creating” cases of COVID-19. “Test everybody, pull-up parking lots, everything else, what we’ve done is we’ve created a tremendous number of cases.” Trump told Fox News commentator Sean Hannity in a phone interview (video).
  • Fact check: The US is testing slightly more than similar places (113 tests/1000 people, vs 99/1000 people in the UK, 92/1000 people in Italy, 73/1000 people in Germany.) But it's finding a proportionately greater share of cases (U.S.: 9,250 cases/million, vs. 4,400 cases/million in UK, 3,900 cases/million in Italy and 2,500 cases/million in Germany.)

Reopening schools

Some further reading on reopening schools:
  • 'Science should not stand in the way' of schools reopening, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany says.
  • The CDC will not release a set of documents this week aimed at giving schools advice on how to reopen. Instead, the full set will be published before the end of the month, a CDC spokesperson says.
  • This summer camp in Missouri took extraordinary covid-19 precautions. It still failed. More than 80 campers, counselors, and staff tested positive.
  • At least 30 and possibly as many as 85 kids and counselors at two Georgia YMCA camps tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing closure.
  • Nearly a Thousand COVID-19 Cases Reported in California Day Cares
  • Millions of Seniors Live In Households with School-Age Children
  • Two researchers presented their ideas (informed by “pandemic math”) of how to most safely reopen schools: (1) stagger start dates, (2) have small groups of students alternate school days and work from home days to reduce class sizes, (3) everyone must wear masks and eat lunch in classrooms. The authors state that communities with high infection rates should postpone reopening schools.

Masks and anti-masks

Some further reading on face masks:
  • States that now have a statewide mask requirement in public indoor spaces include: Alabama (Repub. governor), Arkansas (R), California (Dem. governor), Colorado (D), Connecticut (D), Delaware (D), D.C. (D), Illinois (D), Kansas (D), Kentucky (D), Louisiana (D), Maine (D), Maryland (R), Massachusetts (R), Michigan (D), Nevada (D), New Jersey (D), New Mexico (D), New York (D), North Carolina (D), Oregon (D), Pennsylvania (D), Rhode Island (D), Texas (R), Virginia (D), Washington (D), and West Virginia (R). Montana is not yet on that list but issued a face-mask order on Wednesday.
  • Conspicuously absent from this list: Georgia, Florida, and Arizona, three of the biggest hot spots in the country. In fact, yesterday Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp banned cities from issuing face mask orders and sued Atlanta to invalidate the mayor’s mandate.
  • 15 major grocery and retail chains are now requiring face masks in their stores, including Walmart, Kroger, Costco, CVS, and Target.
  • Putting the onus on employees to enforce face mask requirements is adding stress to jobs previously lauded as “essential.” WaPo: “People see it as this big political message when it’s really just about public health,” said Shilo Barrett, 26, a shift supervisor at a Starbucks in Los Angeles, where about 10 percent of shoppers come in without masks despite local and state mandates. “It’s already unfair that we have to work right now because we have bills to pay, and now you’re going to put us in a compromising situation because you don’t want to wear a mask for 5 minutes? That’s not cool.”
  • A nationwide mask mandate would bring the coronavirus under control within 2 months, according to CDC Director Robert Redfield (video). However, presented with this fact during yesterday’s White House press briefing, McEnany said Trump will not issue such an order. “We leave it to localities to make the decisions with regard to face coverings,” she said.
  • Measuring geotagged Twitter posts that reference hashtags like “nomask” and “burnyourmask” revealed that Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Idaho, and Maine contain the most anti-mask sentiment. Keep in mind that prolific users and/or bots can drive these trends, though.
  • The international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA believes it's "absurd" that the Federal Aviation Administration has not mandated that travelers wear masks on all flights during the pandemic.

2020.07.05 20:04 877241 The Case for a Larger House

TL;DR: The House of Representatives in its current form is mathematically incapable of adequately performing its constitutional function and needs to be expanded. This is not an argument for getting rid of the Senate, it's a (statistic-based) argument for returning to the original bicameral congress with one chamber based on population and one chamber with equal representation per state, rather than its current form which is one chamber with equal representation and one chamber seemingly based on nothing at all.

Overly Dramatic Intro

For almost two months while drafting the constitution in 1787, all attending delegates were at an impasse. Their intense disagreement lie in the structure of the legislative branch--specifically whether to award equal representation for all states, as defined in the Virginia Plan, or representation proportional to each state’s population, as defined in the New Jersey Plan. Tensions were nearing a breaking point with delegates threatening to pack up and go home--until July 16th, 1787, after months of frustrated infighting in the unbearable Philadelphia heat, The Great Compromise was reached. The legislature would be divided into two houses--one house, the Senate, would award equal representation to all states, and the other house, the House of Representatives, would award representation proportional to each state’s population.
If Edmund Randolph, the author of the Virginia Plan, saw the state of the House of Representatives today, he would feel cheated.

History

There is no question that the two legislative houses have evolved over time. It was not until 1913, in fact, that the Senate became an elected body. The Constitution originally called for senators to be elected by state legislatures, but only after suffering multiple-year vacancies thanks to political deadlock, Congress ratified the 17th amendment to change the process. Most today see this as a smart change.
The House of Representatives, however, has been drifting farther and farther away from its original purpose since the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929. This act, which fixed the number of representatives to 435 (a number first reached in 1911), has to date nearly quadrupled the average population of a congressional district--it rose from 210,328 in 1910 to 710,769 in 2010.

The Problem

The major issue exacerbated by the district cap is vote dilution. It can be explained by a very simple hypothetical: if what is unanimous in one district is split nearly evenly in another, equally apportioned district, then the vote in congress is a tie despite the issue gaining 75% of the popular support--recreating a common criticism of the Senate and the Electoral College that the power of anyone’s vote is heavily dependent on the area they live in--an inherently undemocratic principle. This distortion of popular opinion grows ever worse as district populations continue to spiral out of control, and in the house of congress that is supposed to be proportional, it's a problem that must be addressed.
The problem is only amplified by the fact that people’s voices are not even diluted equally. Largely because states grow at different rates (and a congressional district cannot overlap state boundaries, nor can a representative be split into fractions) the inequality between the population of congressional districts has grown out of control. Residents of Rhode Island’s 1st District, for example, enjoy a district population of 526,283, while residents of Montana’s At Large District have to make do with a district population of 994,416. Essentially, the residents of Rhode Island’s 1st have twice the house representation as those of Montana. Since the House is still capped, the problem only escalates the more it is ignored.
The above is an extreme example, using the most and least populated districts. All other congressional district populations, however, fall in between the above two extremes, and the population standard deviation among all congressional districts is 69,882 people--far too wide a range.
The issue isn't exactly black-and-white: it doesn't benefit democrats over republicans, rural voters over urban voters, western voters over eastern voters or any particular group at all. While specific instances can provide evidence of any of those examples, on aggregate, the misrepresentation seems to be completely arbitrary--and changes with every census. The three largest districts, for example, are Montana's at-large, Delaware's at-large, and Texas' 22nd--consisting of mostly suburban texas.

The Wyoming Rule

A perfect solution to this problem, perfectly equal district sizes, would require a legislature of tens of thousands--it simply is not feasible. There are, however, a number of good solutions. One of such solutions is the Wyoming Rule. If put into law, all congressional districts would be modeled around the size of the least-populous state--by dividing each state’s populations into the closest possible whole number of districts each with a population as close as possible to that of Wyoming. This proposition would add 110 seats to the House of Representatives, under some models, for a total of 545 seats. It would work wonders for equal representation--the average size of a congressional district would decrease from 712,972 currently to 577,952, and it would decrease the average district population standard deviation from 69,882 currently to 56,398, indicating much more parity among districts, which should be a goal in what is supposed to be equal-as-possible representation.
It would also close the population gap between the two extreme ends of the current house: using 2010 census data, the smallest congressional district would be 407,090 people in size, and the largest would be 710,231. A gap of 300,000, but still much better than the current gap of nearly half a million people.
There are still problems with this rule, however. Tying the number of seats in the legislature to the population of a state creates a potentially volatile house size. If the lowest population state experienced an oil boom or a biblical catastrophe, the size of the legislature would have to change dramatically to reflect that. For example, if the Wyoming Rule was law, the House would have been 1,862 members in 1900 and 1,095 members in 1910, an enormous drop in only 10 years. For a more recent example, it would have been 666 members in 1970, but only 565 members in 1980, once again a huge drop in only 10 years. This does not bode well for stability and can create huge changes far too quickly, especially considering the extremely polarized political affiliations of different states today.

The Cube-Root Rule

A potentially better solution to the problem is the Cube-Root Rule, where the size of the House is tied to the cubic root of the nation’s population. This rule would provide slower and more predictable change--which is a feature, rather than a drawback. If this rule were law, the House today would be 684 members--considerably more than the 435 it is today and larger still than the House under the Wyoming Rule. This would provide an average district size of 469,883, much better for representation and even better than the wyoming rule.
If the size of the legislature is concerning, take another look. The US currently has only the 26th largest legislature (at 535 members) in the world, and yet also the 3rd largest population. Under the Cube-Root Rule, the US would have 784 members of congress, similar to India at 790, yet India has almost quadruple the population of the US. Countries such as the UK, France, and Germany, which all have a fraction of the population of the US, have 1,430, 925, and 699 person legislatures, respectively. Ranking each country by number of citizens to one representative puts the US at the very bottom, above only India (again, which has nearly quadruple the population).

Conclusion

We are seeing two problems complementing each other--one the simple issue of having congressional representatives answer to too-large populations, but also the disparity between them. They are problems that will only continue to grow as the population does, and they are problems that are easy to overlook. The House, in its current form, is grossly incompatible with the founding fathers’ original vision--mirroring common arguments against the Electoral College and the Senate in that it gives US citizens unequal voice in government depending on where they live. The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 was borne out of short-sighted aversion to physically expanding the chamber--an excuse that seems trivial when considering the problems faced nearly 100 years later.

2020.06.16 14:49 rusticgorilla [Lost in the Sauce] Trump admin hides Paycheck Protection program details; lawmakers benefit from loans

Welcome to Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
Title refers to: The Trump admin is blocking IGs from getting info on over $1 trillion in relief spending, including corporation bailouts. The admin is also withholding PPP info from Congress, meaning we don't know if Trump or his family took taxpayer money. Additionally, we learned that at least 4 members of Congress have benefited from PPP money, but aren't required to disclose it.
Housekeeping:

Coronavirus

Inspectors general warned Congress last week that the Trump administration is blocking scrutiny of more than $1 trillion in spending related to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the previously undisclosed letter, Department of Treasury attorneys concluded that the administration is not required to provide the watchdogs with information about the beneficiaries of programs like the $500 billion in loans for corporations.
Treasury Secretary Mnuchin refused to provide Congress with the names of recipients of the taxpayer-funded coronavirus business loans. After criticism, Mnuchin began to walk back his denial, saying he will talk to lawmakers on a bipartisan basis “to strike the appropriate balance for proper oversight” of PPP loans “and appropriate protection of small business information.”
At least 4 lawmakers have benefited in some way from the Paycheck Protection program they helped create. Politico has been told there are almost certainly more -- but there are zero disclosure rules, even for members of Congress.
  • Republicans on the list include Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, a wealthy businessman who owns auto dealerships, body shops and car washes, and Rep. Vicky Hartzler of Missouri, whose family owns multiple farms and equipment suppliers across the Midwest. The Democrats count Rep. Susie Lee of Nevada, whose husband is CEO of a regional casino developer, and Rep. Debbie Mucarsel Powell of Florida, whose husband is a senior executive at a restaurant chain that has since returned the loan.
Mick Mulvaney dumped as much as $550,000 in stocks the same day Trump assured the public the US economy was 'doing fantastically' amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Mulvaney unloaded his holdings in three different mutual funds, each of which is primarily made up of US stocks. The next day, the value of the mutual funds tanked.

Cases rising in many states

Good summary: There was supposed to be a peak. But the stark turning point, when the number of daily COVID-19 cases in the U.S. finally crested and began descending sharply, never happened. Instead, America spent much of April on a disquieting plateau, with every day bringing about 30,000 new cases and about 2,000 new deaths. This pattern exists because different states have experienced the coronavirus pandemic in very different ways…The U.S. is dealing with a patchwork pandemic.
As of Friday, coronavirus cases were significantly climbing in 16 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
Oklahoma is experiencing a massive increase in coronavirus cases just days before Trump’s planned rally in Tulsa. In Tulsa county itself, 1 in roughly 390 people have tested positive. Yet Trump plans on cramming 20,000 people in an event with voluntary face mask policy and no social distancing. Attendees must sign a waiver that absolves the president’s campaign of any liability from virus-related illnesses.
  • On Monday, Pence lied saying that Oklahoma has “flattened the curve.” As you can see at any of the resources immediately below, this is not even close to true. Over the past 14 days, the state has seen a 124% increase in cases and reports 65% of ICU beds are in use.
  • Tulsa World Editorial Board: This is the wrong time and Tulsa is the wrong place for the Trump rally. "We don't know why he chose Tulsa, but we can’t see any way that his visit will be good for the city...Again, Tulsa will be largely alone in dealing with what happens at a time when the city’s budget resources have already been stretched thin."
  • Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted that he is a victim of double standards when it comes to perception of his decision to resume campaign rallies in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, declaring that attempts to “covid shame” his campaign “won’t work!”
Resources to track increases: There are many different sites with various methods of visualizing the spread of coronavirus. Here are some that may be particularly useful this summer… Topos COVID-19 compiler homepage and graphs of each state since re-opening. How we reopen Safely has stats on each state’s progress towards meeting benchmarks to reopen safely (hint: almost none have reached all the checkpoints). WaPo has a weekly national map of cases/deaths; the largest regional clusters are in the southeast.
On Monday, Trump twice said that “if we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, if any,” (video). Aside from the fact that cases exist even if we don’t test for them, we cannot explain the rising number of cases by increased testing capacity: In at least 14 states, the positive case rate is increasing faster than the increase in the average number of tests.
  • Reminder: In March Trump told Fox News that he didn't want infected patients from a cruise ship to disembark because it would increase the number of reported cases in the US. "I like the numbers being where they are," Trump said at the time. "I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault."
Fired scientist Rebekah Jones builds coronavirus dashboard to rival Florida’s… Her site shows thousands more people with the coronavirus, and hundreds of thousands fewer who have been tested, than the site run by the Florida Health Department.

Equipment and supplies

More studies prove wearing masks limits transmission and spread of coronavirus… One study from Britain found that routine face mask use by 50% or more of the population reduced COVID-19 spread to an R of less than 1.0. The R value measures the average number of people that one infected person will pass the disease on to. An R value above 1 can lead to exponential growth. The study found that if people wear masks whenever they are in public it is twice as effective at reducing the R value than if masks are only worn after symptoms appear.
Meanwhile, Trump officials refuse to wear masks and Trump supporters copy his behavior… VP Mike Pence, leader of the coronavirus task force, published a tweet showing himself in a room full of Trump staffers, none wearing masks or practicing social distancing. Pence deleted the tweet shortly after criticism. A poll last week showed that 66% of likely-Biden-voters “always wear a mask,” while 83% of likely-Trump-voters “neverarely wear a mask.”
  • Trump’s opposition to face masks hasn’t stopped him from selling them to his supporters, though. The online Trump Store is selling $20 cotton American flag-themed face masks.
  • Yesterday, we learned that South Carolina Republican Rep. Tom Rice and family have tested positive for the coronavirus. Just two weeks ago, Rice was on the House floor and halls of the Capitol without wearing a mask.
Internal FEMA data show that the government’s supply of surgical gowns has not meaningfully increased since March… The slides show FEMA’s plan to ramp up supply into June and July hinges on the reusing of N95 masks and surgical gowns, increasing the risk of contamination. Those are supposed to be disposed of after one use.
Nursing homes with urgent needs for personal protective equipment say they’re receiving defective equipment as part of Trump administration supply initiative. Officials say FEMA is sending them gowns that look more like large tarps -- with no holes for hands -- and surgical masks that are paper-thin.
More than 1,300 Chinese medical-device companies that registered to sell PPE in the U.S. during the coronavirus pandemic used bogus registration data… These companies listed as their American representative a purported Delaware entity that uses a false address and nonworking phone number.
Florida is sitting on more than 980,000 unused doses of hydroxychloroquine, but hospitals don’t want it… Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered a million doses of the drug to show support for Trump, but very few hospitals have requested it.

Native American communities struggle

The CARES Act money for Native American tribes, meant to assist people during the pandemic, came with restrictions that are impeding efforts to limit the transmission of the virus. For instance, the funds can only be used to cover expenses that are "incurred due to the public health emergency." On the Navajo Nation, the public health emergency is inherently related to some basic infrastructure problems. 30% of Navajo don’t have running water to wash their hands, but the money can’t be used to build water lines.
Federal and state health agencies are refusing to give Native American tribes and organizations representing them access to data showing how the coronavirus is spreading around their lands, potentially widening health disparities and frustrating tribal leaders already ill-equipped to contain the pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has turned down tribal epidemiologists’ requests for data that it’s making freely available to states.
A Hospital’s Secret Coronavirus Policy Separated Native American Mothers From Their Newborns… Pregnant Native American women were singled out for COVID-19 testing based on their race and ZIP code, clinicians say. While awaiting results, some mothers were separated from their newborns, depriving them of the immediate contact doctors recommend. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that state officials would investigate the allegations.

Personnel & appointees

Former IG Steve Linick told Congress he was conducting five investigations into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the State Department before he was fired. In addition to investigating Pompeo's potential misuse of taxpayer funds and reviewing his decision to expedite an $8 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, Linick’s office was conducting an audit of Special Immigrant Visas, a review of the International Women of Courage Award, and another review "involving individuals in the Office of the Protocol."
  • Pompeo confidant emerges as enforcer in fight over watchdog’s firing: Linick testified that Undersecretary of State for Management Brian Bulatao, a decades-old friend of Pompeo’s, “tried to bully [him]” out of investigating Pompeo.
Trump has empowered John McEntee, director of the Presidential Personnel Office, to make significant staffing changes inside top federal agencies without the consent — and, in at least one case, without even the knowledge — of the agency head. Many senior officials in Trump's government are sounding alarms about the loss of expertise and institutional knowledge.
Trump’s nominee for under secretary of defense for policy, retired Army Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata, has a history of making Islamophobic and inflammatory remarks against prominent Democratic politicians, including falsely calling former President Barack Obama a Muslim.
Amid racial justice marches, GOP advances Trump court pick hostile to civil rights. Cory Wilson, up for a lifetime seat on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, has denied that restrictive voting laws lead to voter suppression and called same-sex marriage “a pander to liberal interest groups.”
Interior Secretary David Bernhardt has indefinitely extended the terms of the acting directors of the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service, sidestepping the typical Senate confirmation process for those posts and violating the Federal Vacancies Reform Act,

Courts and DOJ

The Supreme Court declined on Monday to take a closer look at qualified immunity, the legal doctrine that shields law enforcement and government officials from lawsuits over their conduct. Developed in recent decades by the high court, the qualified immunity doctrine, as applied to police, initially asks two questions: Did police use excessive force, and if they did, should they have known that their conduct was illegal because it violated a "clearly established" prior court ruling that barred such conduct? In practice, however, lower courts have most often dismissed police misconduct lawsuits on grounds that there is no prior court decision with nearly identical facts.
The Supreme Court ruled that federal anti-discrimination laws protect gay and transgender employees. Justice Neil M. Gorsuch and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. joined the court’s liberals in the 6 to 3 ruling. They said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination “because of sex,” includes LGBTQ employees.
  • Alito, writing more than 100 pages in dissent for himself and Thomas, accused the court's majority of writing legislation, not law. Kavanaugh wrote separately: "We are judges, not members of Congress...Under the Constitution and laws of the United States, this court is the wrong body to change American law in that way."
  • Just days before the SCOTUS opinion was released, the Trump administration finalized a rule that would remove nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people when it comes to health care and health insurance. The SCOTUS ruling may make it easier to challenge the changes made by Trump.
The Supreme Court also declined to take up California’s “sanctuary” law, denying the Trump administration’s appeal. This means that the lower court opinion upholding one of California's sanctuary laws is valid, limiting cooperation between law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, two of the Court's conservative members, supported taking up the case.
A federal appeals court appeared unlikely Friday to stop a judge from examining why the Justice Department sought to walk away from its prosecution of Michael Flynn. "I don't see why we don't observe regular order," said Judge Karen Henderson. "Why not hold this in abeyance and see what happens?" Judge Robert Wilkins told Flynn's lawyer that if Sullivan doesn't let the government drop the case, "then you can come back here on appeal."

Other

Good read: Fiona Hill on being mistaken as a secretary by Trump, her efforts to make sure he was not left alone with Putin, and what the US, UK and Russia have in common. “It’s spitting in Merkel’s face,” said Vladimir Frolov, a former Russian diplomat who’s now a foreign-policy analyst. “But it’s in our interests.”
  • Russia’s Foreign Ministry welcomed Trump’s plan to withdraw more than a quarter of U.S. troops from Germany.
  • Op-Ed: Why cutting American forces in Germany will harm this alliance
According to a new book, the Secret Service had to seek more funding to cover the cost of protecting Melania Trump while she stayed in NYC to renegotiate her prenup - taxpayers paid tens of millions of dollars to allow her to get better terms. Additionally, NYPD estimated its own costs conservatively at $125,000 a day.
Georgia election 'catastrophe' in largely minority areas sparks investigation. Long lines, lack of voting machines, and shortages of primary ballots plagued voters. As of Monday night, there were still over 200,000 uncounted votes.
Fox News runs digitally altered images in coverage of Seattle’s protests, Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
Fox News Mocked After Mistaking Monty Python Joke for Seattle Protest Infighting
In addition to holding a rally on the day after Juneteenth (originally scheduled the day of), Trump will be accepting the GOP nomination in Jacksonville on the 60th anniversary of “Ax Handle Saturday,” a KKK attack on African Americans.
Environmental news:
  • Ruling against environmentalists, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the federal government has the authority to allow a proposed $7.5 billion natural gas pipeline to cross under the popular Appalachian Trail in rural Virginia.
  • Trump administration has issued a new rule blocking tribes from protecting their waters from projects like pipelines, dams, and coal terminals.
  • The EPA published a proposal in the Federal Register that critics described as an assault on minority communities coping with the public health legacy of structural racism. The rule would bar EPA from giving special consideration to individual communities that bear the brunt of environmental risks — frequently populations of color.
  • The Trump administration is preparing to drill off Florida’s coast, but says it will wait until after the November election to avoid any backlash from Florida state leaders.
Immigration news
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection used emergency funding meant for migrant families and children to pay for dirt bikes, canine supplies, computer equipment and other enforcement related-expenditures… The money was meant to be spent on “consumables and medical care” for migrants at the border.
  • ACLU files lawsuit against stringent border restrictions related to coronavirus that largely bar migrants from entering the United States.
  • Under Trump’s leadership, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has mismanaged its finances so badly that it has sought an emergency $1.2 billion infusion from taxpayers. When Trump took office, USCIS inherited a budget surplus. A large amount of funding is drained by its deliberate creation of more busy work for immigrants and their lawyers — as well as thousands of USCIS employees. These changes are designed to make it harder for people to apply for, receive or retain lawful immigration status.
  • Asylum-seeking migrants locked up inside an Arizona ICE detention center with one of the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases say they were forced to clean the facility and are 'begging' for protection from the virus
  • ICE plans to spend $18 million on thousands of new tasers and the training to use them

Fonus as an entity is registered in Delaware, USA and in Hong Kong.
What does Fonus offer At the time being Fonus is offering a service for $30 USD a month which gets you unlimited talk text and data in North America (US/CAN/MEX) with a US number by reselling at&t services through a program called "AT&T partner exchange"
Fonus Sim cards activated after June 1st 2020 are able to roam on Bell, Telus, Rogers and Freedom where available.
Fonus sim cards don't officially support tablets and tethering.
Fonus sim card don't have a disclosed data cap, data is throttled for abusers.
How is Fonus come custometech support? Fonus offers two primary channels for support:
Apparently Fonus V2 sims can now also call internationally free of charge. The following countries have confirmed user reports of international calling working

It has been reported that the international calling feature isn't actually offered, it is a bug that allows it, users who called internationally found their calling capabilities to numbers outside of the USA blocked completely a result.
Throttling Initially Fonus promised no throttling whatsoever, apparently now Fonus users experience throttling after big data usage, the exact amounts aren't confirmed yet.
What do I have to lose? Firstly, be sure not to rely on Fonus as your primary connection since as the company is fairly new, plus the company struggled for 6 months after launch to start delivering, we never know when service might stop.
Secondly and most importantly, the founder and CEO Simon Tian has shown very disturbing mishandling of personally identifiable customer information, he and his systems/databases were hacked several times, in addition he himself has doxxed and leaked customers information directly on various platforms.
Having said that, please think twice before sharing your personal information.
What's the discussion about free service? Is Fonus free? Initially when Fonus launched in November 2019 the CEO Simon Tian proclaimed an offer, if this subreddit reaches a certain amount of subs by a certain time he'll offer the first 500 customers free service for life.
*Fonus isn't registered as an MVNO (There are approximately 140 authorized wireless MVNOs registered with the FCC currently) with the FCC. they are utilizing a MVNE’s (Mobile Virtual Network Enabler) (zoomMediaPlus) to power their platform.
If you find any missing information, or misinformation or inaccuracies in our PSA please advise a Mod or comment below

2020.06.07 20:52 Admiral_Red_Wings Many have blamed Bernie Sanders loss on anything (campaign strategy, rhetoric, past controversies, etc) but his ideology and policy platform. How does that comport with left-wing Dems losing (or soon to lose based on polling) to moderate-leaning Dems in Senate primaries this year?

Competitive primary elections thus far. Complete list here. Some states cancelled their primaries because of no candidates running or an incumbent Senator running unopposed.
Upcoming primaries elections. Many were delayed because of the pandemic.
Many have blamed Bernie's loss on anything (campaign strategy, rhetoric, past controversies, etc) but his ideology and policy platform.
How does that comport with left-wing Democrats losing (or soon to lose base on polling) to moderate-leaning Democrats in Senate primaries House primaries this year?
Why are left-wing Democrats losing in every 2020 primary in every state? Why have they failed to recruit, organize, and fundraise for serious candidates to challenge Democratic incumbent Senators - even ones in the "ideal" environment of Senators considered "too moderate" for the deep blue, highly-Democratic states they represent?
Why is a left-wing incumbent Democratic Senator (Markey) from a deep blue, supposedly liberal state (Massachussetts) on the edge of losing to a centrist challenger? Why is Markey the only incumbent Democratic Senator to have a serious chance of losing his primary?
Maybe each of these elections could be explained away individually, but when put together and combined with the results of the presidential primary, it points to a very clear pattern.
